There are over 40 prophecies in the Old Testament (The Jewish Scriptures) that point directly to Jesus as being The Messiah, and so this question is wrong. Jesus is and was the Jewish Messiah - but not the kind of Messiah that they thought he would be.
Answer:
The above answer was obviously written by a Christian as it has no basis in fact from the Jewish perspective. The key issue is that the Christian concept of 'messiah' not only does not exist in Judaism and Tanach (Jewish Bible), it actually diametrically opposes the teaching of Tanach.
The word 'messiah' is the Anglicised form of the Hebrew 'moshiach'. The word moshiach literally translates as 'anointed'. Moshiach is a title that was given to any person who was anointed with oil as part of their initiation into serving HaShem (The Creator). As a result, we've actually had hundreds of valid moshiachim (pl) in our history - kings, priests, prophets, etc.
Based on the stories of the Christian Bible, Jesus would not have qualified as a moshiach of any kind. He did not have the lineage to be a king or priest, nor was he a prophet, judge, or hold any other station that would have resulted in him being given the title of moshiach.
Please note that although the Christian Old Testament is based on the Tanach, the OT has been thoroughly altered to support the teachings of Christianity.
Yes.However, many don't believe that he was/is and that Christ was a paranoid schizophrenic. We believe schizophrenia was around in the 1500s, so why not two-thousand and almost twelve years ago?
A paranoid shizo hears voices, but many heard what Christ heard when he heard voices.
A paranoid schizophrenic is often suicidal; Christ was hardly suicidal.
Paranoid schizophrenics are often prone to violence and anger. I hardly think overturning the greedy money changers in the Temple Jews worshipped is violent.
Maybe he was angry when he demanded demons leave a victim's ravaged body?
A paranoid schizophrenic is often delusional, you tell me what is delusional about wanting people to Love one another?
Or loving their enemies? Or giving to the poor? or maybe it is delusional to feed masses of people that came for some hope in their lives, to also feed those people for nothing.
Christ didn't write The Bible, prophets, disciples and apostles inspired by the Holy Spirit wrote the Bible.
That is why the Bible is the only Book that has made it into our modern world intact after a thousand years of possible edits and strike outs that could have happened.
There were many witnesses to his miracles, as I mentioned some heard the same voices he heard, for instance at his babtism when God said , This is my Son in whom I am pleased.
Prophecies were written hundreds of years before he was born. He fulfilled those.
He prophesied that the Temple would be torn down brick upon brick and he predicted the time it would happen.
That time was at least 60 years after he had been crucified.
What is Christ's pedigree?
His Father, God almighty via the Holy Ghost inseminated Mary, whose uncle and father were Levites.
When He was born he was King through God Almighty and priest through his mother.
A King and Priest Forever as was Melchidezek to whom Abraham paid tribute well may a 1000 years before?
Humans saw Joseph as His father, and although Joseph came from the tribe of Judah whom Jacob announced would be kings ;God told Jeconiah, a descendant of David, his line would never be kings.
Jesus did not get his kingship from Joseph.
God promised david his kingdom would be forever and God can not lie.
Mary so happened to also have a link to King David, as well as to the tribe of Levi.
That is why, when genealogies were normally done for only for and through Male Jews( referring to anyone form the House of Judah, Benjamin and any other tribe that was restored by the Persians hundreds of years before Christ's birth); mary's relationship to the tribe of Levi and the tribe of Judah was so important, her genealogy was included as well.
Are you a psychiatrist? Do you even know what a paranoid schizophrenic is? have you ever known one?
If you would have, you would probably have been afraid.
Nothing Christ ever did inspired fear. But you see, that is because God is Love and therefore, the abscence of fear.
The apostle John stated that a person that has fear does not have the Truth in them.
I am sure many of the religious establishment of the time thought that Christ was
a trouble maker, none of them ever thought he was a nut. Although some of them claimed, healing people, driving out demons, bringing people back from the dead meant he had an evil spirit in him.
That's why he told them, you don't know My Father, if you did you would know me. That is the Holy Spirit would reveal Him to you. No, he told them but that is because you are of your father, the author of all lies and murder, satan.
He told them because you claim to know the Law of Moses, you are guilty.Anyhting you said about me, God would forgive you, but because you say the Spirit in me that heals is an evil spirit, you have committed Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit and that sin will never be forgiven you, not in this world nor the next.
All of the priests, Jews were not in agreement with the sanhedrin, clearly saying, how can a man that heals people and does great miracles that bring hope into the world be evil? We must all be careful because he may well be the Messiah we have been awaiting. Remember that who can prevail against God Almighty if he is who he says he is?
One of them Nicodemus, an old priest asked Jesus, how do I get into your kingdom? He told Nicodemus, you must be born again. Nicodemus was upset and told him, how can I return to my mother's womb?
Jesus told Him, you must be born again spiritually like a new baby.
Faith is all you need, call on my name, it is the only Name given to man by which to be saved. I will open a door noone can shut and shut it, so no one can open it.
I am the way, the Truth and the Life, no one comes unto the Father but through me.
If you're not sure about your soul and whether or not there's hope after this short life ends, think carefully. Don't shut yourself out because of vanity or pride.
Vanity and pride caused satan's fall from grace.
Jesus had a pedigree from birth as a priest and king, the priest who circumcised him, declared God has let me see the messiah before the end of my days. The 3 wisemen came form afar because they Knew his birth was so very special and unique.
Jesus had a free will; he wasn't pre-destined. He could see the future and knew the agony he would suffer greater than any human could ever imagine and that was the agony of being separated from His Father for the first time before time, in that endless circle of the Alpha and the Omega.
He prayed to be delivered from his fate, but it was not happening, nevertheless he told His Father
not my will but Thine Will Be Done. When he was on the cross and exclaimed, Father why have You Forsaken Me, the anguish, utter pain, and loneliness was something neither the High Priest or the Romans could begin to imagine.
Jesus did accept the title Messiah.
John:4:25-26:
25: The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
26: Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
Educated Jews who were/are read in the traditional concept of the Messiah knew
the following details:
-- he will bring complete redemption to the Jewish people, both spiritually and physically
-- he will bring eternal peace, love, prosperity, and moral perfection to the entire world
-- he will be human in origin, born of ordinary human parents, and of flesh and blood
like all mortals
-- evil and tyranny will not be able to stand up before him
-- his first task will be to redeem Israel from exile and servitude; oppression, suffering,
and all forms of godlessness will be abolished; all forms of warfare and strife between
nations will vanish
In the opinion of most Jews of that time, Jesus succeeded in none of these respects.
The assumption that the Christian ascription of Jesus' redemptive qualities (i.e. He is the Christ, the truth, and the way) accords with Jewish principles or understandings of the Messiah is false. It is on account of this major issue that Jews opposed what Jesus was saying and doing, even assuming that the Gospels are accurate or historical materials.
The Jewish Messiah is to be an Earthly King, not an incarnation or union with God. As a result, a person claiming to be God himself is instantly recognized as not being the Messiah. John 5:16-18 asserts that Jews clearly believed that Jesus was articulating that he was the physical progeny of God. Additionally, John 3:16 is at fundamental odds with the Torah's prohibition on Human Sacrifice, its prohibition of blood consumption, its prohibition on cannibalism, and its prohibition on expiation for another's sins. There is no verse in the Old Testament that explains that one of the purposes of the Messiah is to die for sin at all (never mind for the sins of other people).
Jesus failed to perform requirements to be the Messiah and additionally performed actions contrary to the established Commandments. The Bible makes clear that one of the defining marks between a True Prophet and a False Prophet is that no True Prophet will ever deviate from the Law as it was established (Deuteronomy 13:1). A Messiah must also comport to this standard, since he is to be a Holy King. Lists of several of these actions continue below.
Functions of the Jewish Messiah that Jesus failed to fulfill (this list is not exhaustive):
The word "messiah" is the transliterated form of the Hebrew "moshiach." The word moshiach means "anointed." The title of moshiach was given to any person who was appropriately anointed with oil as part of their initiation to their service of God. We have had a number of meshichim (plural) in the form of kings and priests. There need be nothing supernatural about a moshiach.
This being said, there is a prophecy of a future moshiach. However, this is a relatively minor topic in Judaism and the Tanakh.
Jews hold that Jesus did not fulfill the requirements of the Jewish messiah, and that a second Coming of the eventual messiah will not be needed.
The Jewish requirements of the messiah are:
* Build the Third Temple (Ezekiel 37:26-28).
* Gather all Jews back to the Land of Israel (Isaiah 43:5-6).
* Usher in an era of world peace, and end all hatred and oppression. As it says: "Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, nor shall they learn war any more" (Isaiah 2:4).
* Spread universal knowledge of the God of Israel, which will unite humanity as one. As it says: "God will be King over all the world. On that day, God will be One and His Name will be One" (Zechariah 14:9).
* The messiah must be descended on his father's side from King David (Genesis 49:10 and Isaiah 11:1).
* The messiah will lead the Jewish people to full Torah-observance. The Torah states that all of its mitzvot (commands) remain binding forever.
More information:
Judaism says very little about Jesus. According to our tradition, the vast majority of the Jews at the time didn't hear of him. The Torah-sages (Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai, Rabbi Yonatan ben Uziel, Chanina ben Dosa, Bava ben Buta, Shimon ben Hillel, Rabbi Eliezer, Rabbi Yehoshua, Rabbi Akiva, and hundreds of others) were active at that time and their yeshivot (Torah-academies) were flourishing. Their tens of thousands of disciples and hundreds of thousands of sympathizers were active in the Jewish world in that generation; they were the leaders and the forefront of Judaism. As Josephus (Antiquities book 18) writes, "the cities give great attestations to them." The great majority of Jews loved their sages and their Torah.
The unlearned class of the Amei-haaretz (ignoramuses) was a small fringe of society, but even they would and did lay down their lives in order not to violate anything of the Torah. As one ancient historian famously wrote:
Hecateus declares again, "what regard we [Jews] have for our laws; and we resolve to endure anything rather than transgress them." And he adds: "They [Jews] may be stripped on this account, and have torments inflicted upon them, and be brought to the most terrible kinds of death, but they meet these tortures after an extraordinary manner, beyond all other people, and will not renounce the religion of their forefathers."
No one (even any who did hear of Jesus) - would have given heed to what was and is considered unacceptable for us. The few who came in contact with him soon lost interest, and the early Christians felt the need to turn to non-Jewish centers of population in order to gain adherents, while the Jews remained Jews.
Judaism does not believe that Jesus is or was anything other than a regular human being.
(See: What do Jews believe God is like?)
We may also note that according to our tradition, prophecy ceased about 340 years before the birth of Jesus; and public miracles stopped even earlier.
because He's the son of god sent here to save us from our sin by dieing on the cross
No Jesus was not "named" the messiah, he WAS the messiah, he was "named" Jesus.
Jesus Christ is the Messiah.
Yes, Jesus is the Messiah!
The Jews do not recognize Jesus of Nazareth as the Messiah, they are still waiting for the Messiah to come.
because may be 1) reveals by the Father that Jesus is the Messiah, 2) intuitively know that Jesus is the long waited Messiah, 3) Jesus told him he is the Messiah or show him some miracles to him and he instantly believe Jesus is the Messiah 4) he had a dream last night that today he will meet the Messiah 5) Philip believed the testament of John the baptist who said that Jesus is the Messiah, I think he is one of the most faithful disciple of John the baptist. Jesus saw his total faith that Philip believed that he is the Messiah, therefore Jesus choose him.
Yes Jesus was the Messiah.
why is the place of jesus birth important to his becoming the messiah
Because Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ, the holy one of God, and this is in his name, Lord Jesus Christ.
He was born the messiah
jesus christ was the messiah
The question is not clear, Jesus Christ the Messiah was born to Mary in Bethlehem.
why is the place of jesus birth important to his becoming the messiah
