Latin and Greek became used for scientific terminology because they are the learnéd (two syllables) languages of Europe. No matter what their native speech, all educated European persons knew Latin and most had some Greek. Also, coming from "dead " languages, Latin and Greek terms do not change meaning over time, as the words of living languages do, and are thus more suited to official use.
