Why is limestone added to the blast furnace during the extraction of iron?

Iron ore contains the impurities sand and clay, which are silicon oxides. Limestone is added to remove these impurities.

Why is hot air blasted into a blast furnace?

Hot air is blasted into the blast furnace to burn the coke (a cheap form of carbon) added to form carbon dioxide.

Is iron oxide ruduced or oxidised in a blast furnace?

It is 96% iron (the rest is mostly sulphur etc.).

How calcium oxide is formed in a blast furnace?

Calcium oxide is not formed here, it is added.

How tall is a blast furnace?

The air (hot blast and possibly added oxygen) ranges from 1800 to 2200F (depending on equipment and operating conditions. The flame temperature (RAFT) is between 3400 and 4200F. The liquid pig iron is generally about 2700F.

What is the function of lime in a blast furnace?

Lime is added to iron ore to help melt some of the unwanted, valuless parts parts of the ore

Why is coke and not coal added to the blast furnace?

Coke contains more carbon than coal and hence coke produces more heat

What would happen if you didn't have limestone?

we wouldn't have these- -Limestone is used in buildings and roads. - Limestone can be used in glass making. - Limestone is used in toothpaste. - Limestone is used in cement and mortar. - Limestone is used in bread and cereals as a source of calcium. - Limestone is used to make paper white. -Limestone is used to purify sugar. -Pulverized limestone is used to neutralize acidic soils. -Limestone can be used to make brake pads. -Limestone is used in the preparation of wools and dyes. -Limestone is used to make antacids. -Limestone is used in climbing walls. -Limestone is used a suppression of methane explosions in underground coalmines. -Limestone is added to plastics, paint, tiles and other materials as both white pigment and cheap filler. -Limestone is used in the manufacture of quicklime (calcium oxide) and slaked lime (calcium hydroxide). -Limestone can be used to create steel by using it in a blast furnace.

What are the processes involved in steel making?

Iron ore is heated to melting point in a blast furnace. Other elements are added depending on the type of steel required Scrap steel can be melted down in an electric furnace also.

What metal is produced when iron ore is mixed with limestone and coke in a blast funace?

Iron. The iron may later have other materials added, and become steel.

What is a mineral that can be made into steel?

Various iron ores are used (e.g. magnetite, hematite, goethite, limonite, siderite) to start with. That is mixed with limestone and coke in a blast furnace to make cast iron. The cast iron is then put in a Basic Oxygen Process furnace to burn off the excess carbon and you get carbon steel. There are other slightly different processes that can be used and various other alloying elements can be added to get a steel with specific desired properties.

What raw materials are used in a blast furnace?

Iron ore or Haematite (Fe3O2), Carbon in the form of 'Coke', and Limestone (Calcium Carbonate 'CaCO3') are all used in the blast furnace. Iron Ore is melted down with coke, the coke burns heat into the furnace. Oxygen gas is blasted in from the sides. The carbon (C) and oxygen (O2) react to form carbon dioxide gas (CO2). At higher temperatures more carbon (C) is reacted with the carbon dioxide(CO2) to create carbon monoxide (2CO). The carbon monoxide 'steals' the oxygen from the iron oxide (Fe3O2), reducing the iron oxide to iron. Due to the impurities in the iron, it is called 'pig iron'. Limestone (CaCO3) is added to remove the impurities from the iron. The limestone (CaCO3) reacts with mainly silicate in the iron, and becomes calcium silicate (CaSiO3) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Calcium silicate is known as 'slag' and is used for construction.
