Louisiana was named for King Louis XIV of France.
In 1682, the French explorer Sieur de La Salle sailed from the Ohio River to the mouth of the Mississippi River, and claimed the entire river valley for France.
He named the territory La Louisiane ("Land of Louis").
Louisiana was claimed by French-Canadiens in the 17th century for France by explorers of the Mississippi river including Jacques Cartier. The original settlers were French led by two French-Canadien brothers named Le Moyne. They were known by their titles Iberville and Bienville. First settling in the area of the Mississippi gulf coast, they moved to New Orleans at the orders of King Louis XIV.
In 1765, Louisiana was transferred by treaty to Spain. It was ruled by Spain until 1801 and was sold to the United States in 1803 by Napoleon Bonaparte. Spain continued to posses and rule parts of what is now Louisiana. At the time they were still part of Florida. The Florida Parishes "rebelled" and formed an independent country called the West Florida Republic which last about three months. U. S. forces from Louisiana attacked and annexed the area including it in the state of Louisiana in 1812.
During the 18th century, after the French and Indian War, French Canadians were expelled from what is now known as Nova Scotia by the British. Many settled in southwestern Louisiana and southeastern Texas. These people are now know as Cajuns.
The area around New Orleans has seen the influx of immigrants from man countries over the years. These include Germany, Ireland, Croatian, the Azores, Vietnam and many others. All of these cultures have left an imprint on Louisiana culture giving Louisiana a rich and unique culture.
Although Louisiana was founded by the French, in no way can it be considered French today.
