Hospitals use a lot of antibiotics to treat infections. As a result of natural selection, some of the Why_is_MRSA_causing_problems_in_many_hospitalsin hospitals are resistant to many antibiotics. This is what has happened with MRSA. As doctors and nurses move from patient to patient, these antibiotic-resistant bacteria are spread easily. MRSA now contributes to around 1000 deaths every year in UK hospitals.

MRSA is such a big problem because it is a virus and viruses are harder to treat than bacteria. MRSA is known as a 'superbug' because it is resistant to most treatments, often the area that is infected has to be removed because there isn't much doctors can do to stop it. MRSA is also antibiotic resistant.

MRSA ( Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus.) Sometimes known as Vancomyacine Resistant (VRSA) is a severe type of Staphylococcal A Bacteria that is resistant to treatment with the strongest Antibiotic available to modern medicine.

This "Super Bug" has developed over decades of a combination of two things; 1. Over prescription of unnecessary antibiotics ( given "just in case" for viruses like common colds, Influenza, mumps, measles, chicken pox etc.)

Antibiotics (Penicillin) is Useless for the treatment of Viruses. &

2. Because of people that; when prescribed an antibiotic, DON"T finish the entire course of treatment. If even a few bacteria survive the treatment they are usually immune to the antibiotic if it is used again so a stronger one is needed & so on until there is simply nothing strong enough to fight the infection.

The common use of "Broad spectrum" antibiotics is also a contributing factor as Antibiotics kill off Good bacteria as well as bad so a Bacteria Specific one is a better choice.

Many hospital workers can become "Carriers" of the Bacteria. They show no symptoms themselves because they have built immunity over time from consistent exposure to the Staph by tending people with it, & some people have the Bacteria present in their body & never know it, but they transmit it to others by contact. In rare occurrences an operating theatre can become contaminated no matter how sterile & clean it is.

These Staphylococcal Bacterias are the ones that cause things like Golden Staph infections in wounds, Pneumococcal Disease, Meninngococcal Disease, Necrotising Faciitis etc.

Most common infections will clear up on their own in about a week or so (the same as viruses) Only seek Antibiotic treatment if there is obvious infection with high fever & other signs of illness. Colds do not need medical treatment.

MRSA cause major problem to doctors because it's ability to adjust to several types of antibiotics. MRSA developing immunity to certain medicines and that is problem with this disease.

Because it can lead to death and it is difficult to treat because it is resistant to most of the antibiotics

Why are staph and other infections a special problem in hospitals and long time care units?

They can be a problem because we use antibiotics and antiseptics too freely and actually select for the antibiotic resistant forms such as MRSA. How can we then control MRSA?

How can someone get MRSA from a person who was treated and cured?

While the disease caused by MRSA may have been cured, it doesn't mean that the person doesn't carry any MRSA germs on his or her body. Many, many people are colonized with MRSA -- it lives on them without causing disease. "Cure" in the case of a MRSA-related rash or boil means that the skin problem is cured, but not that all MRSA has been eliminated from the person. A related question: how do you know that you're not colonized with MRSA yourself?

What is septic MRSA?

Septic (sepsis) MRSA means that the MRSA bacteria has entered into the blood.

What is the MRSA colonized resident?

MRSA colonized resident means that the person is a carrier of the MRSA bacteria.

How does a unharmful staphylococcus turn into MRSA?

MRSA stands for methicilin-resistant staph aureus. MRSA is a type of staph, and a MRSA infection is a kind of staph infection.

MRSA can be in saliva.

Is MRSA a virus?

MRSA is still very rare and will not be in the air. Some studies do talk of the 'MRSA' cloud that can be around an MRSA sufferer, who is ill enough that they do not move very much. An MRSA carrier who may not be ill from the bacteria but has symptoms of respitory infection that lead them to sneeze and cough can project the the MRSA bacteria all around them.

I guess you "could" get MRSA from your cheating spouse, although MRSA is not commonly spread sexually.
