Why is Michigan's nickname The Wolverine State?

[Edit]

It's not. Michigan is nicknamed the Great Lake State, because we are surrounded by four of the five Great Lakes. Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron< and Lake Erie. The Mascot for the University of Michigan is a Wolverine, however you will not find any wolverines in the state of Michigan.
