Why is Mr. Bean called Mr. Bean?

He was named and based on a character originally developed by Atkinson while he was studying for his master's degree at Oxford University, the series follows the exploits of Mr. Bean, described by Atkinson as "a child in a grown man's body"

His character is described as being a child in the body of an adult, he has a childlike nature even when dealing with adult situations. That includes his selfishness and meanspiritedness, but also his ingenuity, thinking of odd ways to combat the situations he finds himself in.
