Theories for why Pennsylvania is called the "Keystone State" include it's geographic location, which was central to the thirteen original colonies, it's importance to the overall colonial economy, and the fact that several important decisions were debated and important documents signed there during the early days of American independence.

A keystone is the middle stone of a doorway arch in a stone building. It wold have to be placed very precisely to keep the wal from falling down.

Pennsylvania came to be called the Keystone State because of its inportance especially in the 18th and early 19th centuries. It holds a central position on the Eastern Seaboard of the U. S. (and before that the English colonies in North America). It was important in commerce because of shipping in Philadelphia as well as farm production and inland transportation routes.

The word keystone comes from architecture and refers to the central, wedge-shaped stone in an arch,
which holds all the other stones in place. PA was given this name because it was the middle colony of the original 13 colonies.

What is the state stone of Pennsylvania?

keystone=================A different answerPennsylvania is known as known as the Keystone State, but that is due to its physical position in the middle of the 13 colonies as well as its key position in the political and socioeconomic development of the country. A keystone is not a kind of stone, but is a structural wedge placed at the top of an arch to hold the arch in place. That being said, the State of Pennsylvania has not selected an official rock, mineral or gem - so there is no state stone of Pennsylvania.
