Peter The Great (Peter I of Russia) ruled from 1672 until his death in 1725. During his reign he modernized Russia and transformed what was nothing more than a small Tsardom into a 3 billion acre Empire, making it a major European power.
Peter the Great understood that it was the economy and decided that there was more to gain by being part of Europe than Asia. He started schools, he made aristocrats literate, he changed their mode of dress and the mores for women. He did all that he could to encourage trade and to make Russia a place with ports and relations with European countries, through their aristocracy. For that reason he fought wars, most aristocrats and the Church.
He changed the face of Russia in five years. He started relations with other aristocratic families. He started Russian aristocrats down the path to living differently from peasants. He brought in different foods and introduced European social customs of entertaining at night and having women accompany their husbands.
In short he remade the country. At the time he did not know if his new Russia would be permanent, but looking back he changed everything.
