Rachael Ray has had slight medical issues with her voice for a long time, I believe; she had surgery this past year on her vocal chords. RR stated that her problem was talking too much and getting to excited with her voice when she speaks; we especially see this from her on television. She also stated that she "doesn't shut up long enough for them to heal", so she may cut back on her show-taping schedule. (Ray is NOT a smoker)

∙ 15y agoAccording to other sites, she has a cyst on her vocal cords. She is planning to have it surgically removed, but until then....raspy voice. When she has the surgery, she will have to stay silent for two weeks

Depends on how loud you yell. Marine Corps Drill Instructors, both male and female, will deliberately scream so long and loud that they damage their vocal cords. Then they will continue to scream after that. They will do this repeatedly until their vocal cords are permanently scarred, giving them a raspy voice which can carry over almost any other noise and which they call "command voice" - on a subjective level it's a very scary voice. Doing this hurts, causes permanent damage, and takes incredible discipline. On a temporary basis, from listening to someone scream, it usually took about 2-6 hours of continuous intense screaming to hear someone else loose their voice. If you're just yelling a lot every day, it could take a long time to permanently alter your voice - months, if not years.
