Ramadan is a sacred month for mainly two reasons:

  • The holiest night in Islam, that is called the Night ogf Honor; or in Arabic 'Laialtu Elqadr'; is in Ramadan when Quran revelation started: Quran says:

?????? ???????? ????????????? ??????????

?? ??? ???????????? ?????????? ??? ?????? ???????????? ??? ???????? ???????????? ? ?????? ?????? ?????????? ??

Meaning English Translation:

{ HaMeem (1) By the Clear Book (2) that We sent down during a Blessed Night (The noght of Honor). We are ever warning. (3)}

[Quran, chapter 44, verses 1-3]

  • God commanded Muslims to fast the whole month of Ramadan that is concluded with Eid Alfitr (the feast on breaking fasting) when Muslims are rewarded on obeying God and fasting. Quran says:

?????? ????????? ??????? ??????? ????? ?????????? ????? ?????????? ???????????? ????? ????????? ?????????????? ? ????? ?????? ??????? ????????? ???????????? ? ????? ????? ???????? ???? ?????? ?????? ????????? ????? ???????? ?????? ? ??????? ???????? ?????? ????????? ????? ??????? ?????? ????????? ?????????????? ?????????? ??????????????? ???????? ?????? ??? ????????? ????????????? ??????????? ?????

Meaning English translation:

{The month of Ramadan is the month in which the Koran was sent down, a guidance for people, and clear verses of guidance and the criterion. Therefore, whoever of you witnesses the month, let him fast. But he who is ill, or on a journey shall (fast) a similar number (of days) later on. Allah wants ease for you and does not want hardship for you. And that you fulfill the number of days and exalt Allah who has guided you in order that you be thankful} [Quran, chapter 2, verse 185].

Ramadan is the holiest of spiritual activities undertaken by Islamists. It has a duration of one month, charted by the moon as Islam uses a lunar calendar of 354 days. Ramadan celebrates the time Mohammed spent in a cave near Mecca writing down the verses of the Qur'an as dictated by the angel Gabriel. For Islamists, Ramadan is a time to immerse themselves in prayer and self reflection. It is also a time to demonstrate their faith by doing good deeds and spending time with family and friends. Ramadan is also a time of fasting during daylight hours. The fast reminds Islamists of the goodness that can be found in self discipline, self restraint and generosity. During the fast, Islamists are reminded of people in the world who may not have enough to eat.

It's the month in which our holy book, the Qur'an, was revealed, and a month of special blessings when God multiplies the good deeds in your name countless times.

It is also the month that Muslims fast, from sunup to sundown, taking meals before and after these. The fasting is so that we can get a glimpse of how starving people feel, and it makes us kinder, thus getting us closer to God.

Prophet Muhammad addressed his companions on the last day of Sha`ban, saying, "Oh people! A great month has come over you; a blessed month; a month in which is a night better than a thousand months; month in which Allah has made it compulsory upon you to fast by day, and voluntary to pray by night. Whoever draws nearer (to Allah) by performing any of the (optional) good deeds in (this month) shall receive the same reward as performing an obligatory deed at any other time, and whoever discharges an obligatory deed in (this month) shall receive the reward of performing seventy obligations at any other time. It is the month of patience, and the reward of patience is Heaven. It is the month of charity, and a month in which a believer's sustenance is increased. Whoever gives food to a fasting person to break his fast, shall have his sins forgiven, and he will be saved from the Fire of Hell, and he shall have the same reward as the fasting person, without his reward being diminished at all."

Prophet Muhammad said: "Ramadan has come to you. (It is) a month of blessing, in which Allah covers you with blessing, for He sends down Mercy, decreases sins and answers prayers. In it, Allah looks at your competition (in good deeds), and boasts about you to His angels. So show Allah goodness from yourselves, for the unfortunate one is he who is deprived in (this month) of the mercy of Allah, the Mighty, the Exalted."
