Baldwin, Siegel, and Bowker chose the name Starbucks in honor of Starbuck, the coffee-loving first mate in Herman Melville's Moby Dick (so company legend has it), and because they thought the name evoked the romance of the high seas and the seafaring tradition of the early coffee traders. The new company's logo, designed by an artist friend, was a two-tailed mermaid encircled by the store's name.

The history and origin of Starbucks dates back to 1971, when three friends, Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl and Gordon Bowker opened a small shop, as all of them had a passion for fresh coffee. They started by selling fresh-roasted, gourmet coffee beans and brewing and roasting accessories.

Originally the company was to be called Pequod, after a whaling ship from Moby-Dick, but this name was rejected by some of the co-founders. The company was instead named after the chief mate on the Pequod, Starbuck.
