Similarly, interactions always have been more Caribbean and Netherlands than South American bound. That's because Suriname was under Dutch rule until November 25, 1975. That also means that the official and main language isn't the typical Romance language of Portuguese or Spanish in the rest of South America. Instead, it's Dutch, which is in the Germanic language family.
In addition to location, the size and the political history don't encourage familiarity with Suriname. Specifically, the country was closed other than to select outsiders during the military government under Desiré Delano Bouterse [b. October 13, 1945]. In fact, it's easy for outsiders and those not in the know to overlook the Republic of Suriname. Indeed, it's South America's smallest sovereign state in terms of total area and of total population.
