For all their faults and eccentricities, they seem to be doing something right, and other countries envy Britain for having them. They are said to provide continuity and stability against the influence of extremist politicians. When France became a republic, it suffered a Reign of Terror. When the German and Russian monarchies fell, the result was the Holocaust and the Gulag. Our freedom to criticise and ridicule them is a sign of their strength, not their weakness.
