HistoryThe Romans used to have a celebration on the 15th of February, whereas the Roman soldiers got to choose a woman they would spend the next twelve months with.

A lot of the soldiers fell in love and got married and did not want to go to battle. So the emperor said no soldiers could get married, but the church disagreed with this and said they would marry them if they wanted. So the emperor had the priests arrested.

One of the priests was called Valentine, and he was in love with the jailer's daughter so he wrote her a letter and the jailer found out about this and had him clubbed to death. At the end of his letter, Valentine wrote, "Farewell from your Valentine." He died on the 14th of February.

No, that's not right. What we all now know as Valentine's Day is actually Saint Valentine's day. I'm not a Catholic so I don't know a huge amount about what his full story is or why he became a saint but one of the things he did was, when he was in jail for being a Christian in Roman times, leave a love letter to his jailer's daughter who he had fallen in love with. This being very romantic his feast day became associated with doing romantic things. The modern greetings card industry has jumped on this and hyped it up out of all proportion, and as with a lot of things like Christmas people have started to forget what it was originally about and even that it is actually a saint's feast day.
