U.S

involvement in the Vietnam War was called a quagmire because the Vietnam War became worse for the U.S

as they went further into the war. The U.S

and its ally South Vietnam were unable to defeat North Vietnam and its Vietcong allies. The U.S

was unable to effectively remove troops from Vietnam without feeling like they lost the fight against containment of Communism.

Public opinion shifted from support of the war to antiwar sentiment.

Because the enemy (communists) were "grinning at us" knowing we couldn't win it (without taking drastic measures), and we couldn't withdraw from it without looking like fools.

So we were stuck!

So, Nixon had to figure out a way of getting the US out...with honor.
