WOW is addicting not only because of friends, but because of the continuous story lines that are made with quests, etc. People really get into the story. The content ability to upgrade your equipment also draws people because they want to be the best they can be. The sheer size of the environment makes people want to explore it, because there are always hidden things that you may miss if you don't go beyond that last hill, etc.
Mainly because it's fun. Oh yeah, and maybe because the initials spell "WOW"... hmm...

World of warcraft is an awesome game just simply becasue of what you can do on it. You can talk and meet people from all over the world during this time makeing and leveling up an Avatar character of your own and when you get to the max level (Level 80 ) with all the friends you have met you can do such level 80 things as raid and gear up this is why world of warcraft (WoW) is so addictive.

Although no official studies have been done (as far as this writer knows), just like anything else, World of Warcraft must be taken in moderation. If you do anything day in and day out it becomes addictive.
