A food can is made of steel with a thin tin layer on the inside. This is because of the galvanic series (based on a salt water solution). Basically there is a table that contains the corrosion order for a number of metals and alloys, the lower end of the list are anode materials (positive) and the materials higher up the table are cathode materials (negative). The positive materials are faster at corroding when submerged in a salt water solution which is were steel is located. This means that the steel will corrode relatively quickly which would then effect the contents of the can. Therefore a tin coating is used as tin is much higher in the series so this means that it will not corrode as quickly as the steel. Hope this helps

Tin was used for cans many years ago; now other materials are used: aluminium, plastics, iron alloys coated with plastics, etc.

The role of coating is to protect against corrosion and to avoid the contamination of foods.

Because it keeps food cool from all of the bad bacteria in the air, these are very bad nonos

Tin and plastic resists corrosion. Therefore, they are used as protective coating in many food cans to prevent corrosion of the can so as to avoid the contamination of the content.

Tin helps protect the food's flavour and oxidizes a much more slowly than steel (so it doesn't rust with the food in it).

Cans were at one time indeed made of tin. However, today cans are generally not made from tin. They are made from steel or aluminium.

They're not, they're steel. Hence the name. Tin cans are made if tin.

Which metal that can be used as a coating on cans because it is less reactive than iron?

Tin

What substance makes tin cans rust the fastest?

The tin in tin cans rusted rapidly unless protected by a coating. Modern "tin cans" are not made from tin and so they do not have this problem. Now they are made of aluminum.

What are examples of tin?

Tin is actually quite uncommon in the domestic envirinment. It is found in solder and in bronze, and brass, ornamenst and door handles being common examples. Tin cans are not made of tin. Tin metal may be found as a coating on foil around the tops of expensive wine bottles. It is also used to toughen glass, applied as the SnCl2(CH3)2 to form an oxide coating.

Well there are tin cans and tin whistles and tin pan alley

Why do tin openers have magnets if tin is non-magnetic?

Because it is a TIN coating on the inside of cans of food {today replaced by teflon/plastic} with the majority of metal comprising of steel.

What food cans are made of tin?

They are made from steel with a thin coating of tin to prevent corrosion.

Can you get tin can poison from a can?

Tin can poisoning was from the lead (metal) that used to be used to seal tin cans. It is no longer used.

What are tin cans used for?

They are used for storing food.

Why can a tin can get rusty even though tin cannot rust?

Because so-called tin cans are actually made of Steel (Iron/Carbon alloy) with a thin coating of tin to act as a corrosion inhibitor.

Is hot temperature hotter in black tin cans or regular tin cans?

If it is just a thin black coating this won't affect the tin can's thermal capacity, this is just the mass of the can times the specific heat of the material. What a black coating does do is affect the absorption and emission of radiated heat energy from the surface. So a black tin will heat up quicker in the sun but will also cool quicker in the shade.
