Superficially the reason for cellular division is the development and growth of the organism, or competition for resources in the case of single celled organisms. But ultimately the reason is procreation and the survival of the genetic information stored inside the cell.

The main reason of Cell Division is because of the cell size. As the cell gets too large, it must divide or become unefficient. It all has to do with the volume to surface area ratio. When the volume of a cell is larger, it has more need. For example, a larger cell will need more nutrients like proteins, sugars, and other digested foods. It will also require more exporting of wastes like CO2, and other used nutrients. However, a cell should also have a large surface area so that more nutrients can be imported and more waste shipped out at one time. Even though a bigger cell would have a larger surface area than a smaller one, the small ratio of volume to surface area is much more ideal. When a cell gets larger the volume grows a lot but the surface area increases in size by only a small amount so it is much more efficient being smaller.
