Originally, running into the try zone and touching the ball down did not give any points. All you got was an attempt or 'try' at goal via being allowed to place the ball and kick (a place kick for goal).

Or when William Webb Ellis put the ball down he asked: "Was that a goal?" and the sports master replied, "No, but it was a good try".
