Spelling bees have everything to do with bees. You just have to be buzzing about the right bee. English is particularly good at having words with several different meanings. Bee is such a word. A bee is a gathering of people who come together for a special purpose. Examples that were more widely known perhaps a generation or two ago are quilting bee, or sewing bee.
