It is probably derived from the work systematic, which means a methodical approach characterised by order and planning based upon a principle or procedure. This order normally comes from the building of a larger component through the progressive addition and testing of all smaller sub-components in an orderly and controlled manner, thereby reaching the end goal. If an unsystematic approach were to be taken, there is no telling what the result would be.

It's also because it's based on looking at issues as a whole , as a complex of intereacting parts, rather than looking at parts of a problem isolated from their context.
