Baptism is important to Christians, as it welcomes a person into the Christian religion. Similar induction ceremonies are used in other religions; the concept is very much older than Christianity.

Baptism is routinely used by Christians as a naming ceremony for a baby or older person being welcomed into the Christian community; the naming of Christian babies is frequently called 'christening'.

Jesus was baptized by John the baptizer even though John was reluctant to do so.

Jesus convinced John to baptize him so that "all righteousness would be fulfilled" as he put it (see the gospel of Matthew 3:13-17). It seems that Jesus was taking the lead in doing what he would require of his followers, and that to do anything less would come short of what was right.

Jesus told a man named Nicodemus that he must be born of water and the spirit of God to enter the kingdom of God (see the gospel of John 3:1-5) and then was later found in the same context to be in the wilderness baptizing many through his disciples, John 3:22 & 4:1-2.

In keeping with Jesus statement about the new birth to Nicodemus, Jesus' Apostle Paul later wrote that we rise from the waters of baptism to walk in "newness of life", Romans 6:3-4.

Jesus also told the apostles to preach the gospel (his life, death, burial and resurrection) and to baptize those who believed it in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Matthew 28:18-20. There is no other command in Jesus' new covenant that was specifically taught to be done in the name of all three, which fact alone sets it apart as a divinely emphasized teaching.

This is exactly what Jesus' apostle Peter preached and did in Acts 2:14-41 (see especially 2:38).

John the Baptist was baptising for the remission of sins, when Jesus came also to be baptised. As Jesus rose out of the water, he heard the voice of God from heaven announce that Jesus was his beloved Son, and saw the Holy Spirit alight on him as a dove. In Mark's Gospel, where the story first appeared, the baptism, God's voice from heaven and the forty days in the wilderness are linked through the framework, parallel structure to the Transfiguration, where once again God reveals himself and announces that Jesus is his beloved son, thus emphasising, by association, God's revelation at the baptism of Jesus and no doubt the most important message of the gospel:A . John explains the coming of Jesus (Mark 1:1-8)
