Several reasons: Logical: Even if it has been proved beyond reasonable doubt that someone is guilty, there is a chance that they will be innocent. A few people are executed in error every decade. Religious: Most religions forbid killing outright. Moral: If the state kills a murderer, it makes them also guilty of killing; therefore guilty of the same crime. Legal: The United Nations Declaration of Human Rights and Protocols of Engagement makes killing of an unarmed civilian illegal and a crime against humanity. The eighth amendment to the US Constitution forbids cruel punishment. One woman who survived a low dose of the same drug used lethal injection describe it like so: 'like fire running over every inch of skin and in every part of the body. More pain than I can imagine. I began to pray to god to let me die'. A bit cruel.

Monetary: from trial to execution, executing someone incurs several times the cost an inmate sentenced to life would incur.

The USA is the only developed country to use the death penalty in the last 10 years.

It is contentious for the same reason as abortion and homosexuality. There are many people with varying prejudices based on their personal belief systems who would advocate for or against particular social issues which are in their personal interest. There are many people with their varying prejudices for and against the taking of human life. The pro-lifers argue that life is precious (God given) and must be preserved at all cost. The supporters of justifiable termination (pro-choicers) argue that life preservation should be in symbiosis with global and social realities. In other words, the pro-lifers prefer that a child is brought into a world of torment/torture (hell) as opposed to the humane termination of an objectionable pregnancy. They also prefer to spend taxpayer's dollars to preserve the life of a vicious and terrifying criminal as opposed to destroying evil. The supporters of justifiable termination believe that the victims and their family are far more important than the vicious criminals and that tax dollars can be better spent for the welfare of underprivileged individuals, who are diligent and dedicated members of the society.

Would also like to add that ppl can be pro-choice when it comes to abortion but be against death penalty. It's never that easy. And of course the opposite.

Argument for the death penalty?

Capital punishment, or the death penalty, can serve as a warning to deter people from committing heinous crimes. It probably does dissuade some people from murdering, but not in every case. Some people see all forms of capital punishment as inhumane, while some think that some are more humane than others. It can provide closure to the grieving families of murder victims, but it causes further agony for the innocent families of the perpetrator.
