Modern day bakers fill King's cakes at Epiphany with any number of fillings -- cream cheese, apple, cherry or almond paste. The filling is not purposefully "hidden," however. What is often hidden in a King's cake is a bean or coin as a token of favor to the finder when the cake is eaten. This "chosen one" is sometimes crowned "King" or "Queen" in celebration of the Magis' visit to Christ.

On January 6th, the Three Wise Men's Day is celebrated in Spain and a sweet called Roscon de Reyes is served. This is a large ring-shaped cake baked for Epiphany. This is not an ancient celebration as it has become popular only in the past 30 or 40 years. It was originated from the Roman Empire when people celebrated the lengthening of days after the winter solstice with a festival dedicated to Saturn. It is said that King Philip V imported this tradition from France. A figure and a bean are baked inside the cake, and in some cakes, money. Tradition dictates that the person who finds the bean must pay the Roscon and the person who finds the figure would be crowned as king. There is also mention of cheese sometimes being hidden in the cake.

A bean or small trinket is hidden. Whoever gets it gets to wear the crown that comes with the cake and, traditionally, provides the cake the next year. In more recent years, cream cheese is used inside these cakes, which are served at Epiphany, as well as other treats such as fruits.
