Why is city life often compared with life in hell?

Life in a big city can be much more troublesome than life in small towns. You need to be ready for crime at all times, your schedule is always packed, everyone is always running from one place to the next, traffic is usually HORRIBLE in most major cities, people are not as nice.

But yet, living in a city also has it's advantages, like more economic opportunities, a lot of things to do, a lot of people to meet.
