A Dictatorship, like all forms of government, has good points and bad points. On the good side, there is no question about who has authority, and he is able to enforce his rule with military force if necessary. Well and good. On the minus side, however, the direction the dictator takes may not be popular with the people and he will be obliged to use force and secret police methods to enforce his rule. Dictatorships can be and frequently are brutal and their brutality is not held back by any institutions of law which control the behaviour of government. At the same time the dictator and his close associates generally allow the power to go to their heads so they end up being a crazier and crazier government.

Dictatorships still look attractive to many leaders. The prospect of having the power to get things done, without having to deal with an opposition or a fickle electorate, is what many of them want. Sometimes, when none of the options open to the government are likely to be popular, these advantages may make a dictatorship the best option for the good of the country.

The United States has long favoured dictatorship as a form of government for any country other than itself, as it is the easiest way to ensure the friendliness of the other state--there is only one person to bribe.

The suppression of new and or better ideas, hampers a nation's economic, social and political development. Dissension is met with repression. The idea that the US prefers to deal with dictatorships is not logical.

People aren't that free. The population must accept the decisions made by the leader, even if they dont like them. It doesn't work that well.
