it's not some shows...it's ALL shows (or all fictitious shows at least). The pilot is the episode they film to get approval from the network whether they're going to be signed or whatever. Not all pilots even air (sometimes not even the ones of successful shows). Sometimes they'll re-shoot the first episode, maybe even re-write it because the pilot is the "test". As to why they call it a pilot, I'm not exactly sure...it's probably a metaphor for a maiden voyage or something.

∙ 13y agoIn television, a "pilot" or "pilot presentation" is usually filmed being a program ordered to show the network how the concept/script would function as a filmed production. These often become the first episode of the series, with or without additional edits, although some pilots are completely reshot to function as the first episode (especially in the case of recasting).
So, the first episode of many TV series is called "Pilot" because the episode functions as a pilot for the series, and the writers aren't creative enough to think up a real title. Some show's have played on this, e.g., the first episode of Futurama was entitled "Space Pilot 3000."

∙ 14y agoA pilot is the sample episode filmed to sell the show to a network. Many pilots become the first episode if the series is picked up as it has already been paid for. If there are major cast or character changes to the pilot then it is not shown and a new pilot episode is filmed. If accepted, that becomes the first episode.
