obviously what i think is you take a rag, and put really hot water on it, then rub the fruit or veggie on the hot rag..

The hot temperature of the rag in question would have the effect of killing some of the germs that may be on the fruit or veg. Really i think that the main reasons for washing fruit and veg would be A. to remove germs. B. to limit the amount of dirt left on them. C. to remove as much as possible the amount of pesticides and other man made residues which may still be left on them.

Washing fruit and veg is also important when traveling to a foreign country for your own peace of mind due to other possible contaminates that your body may not be used to.

What is the function of a paring knife?

A quality paring knife is a small sharp knife used in paring fruits or vegetables. Its small size and multipurpose use makes it one of the most used knives in home and commercial kitchens as it lends itself to a variety of cutting uses (e.g. peeling, trimming, coring, garnishing). Its blade length, which can range from 2 3/4 to 4 inches, is short compared to other kitchen cutlery and has a curved or tapered cutting edge, similar to that of a small chef's knife.
