Why is it call a soap opera if there is no singing? In: Soap Operas |
[Edit] |
[Edit]
Soap Operas were so named due to the fact that these melodramatic shorts were first sponsered by soap companies.
There was quite a bit of dramatic lighting & background music (along with a bit of over acting) which caused the shows to be compared to operas.
Opera has a wider meaning than just the musical plays known as "operas." Opus (the singular of opera) means "work" as in a piece or product from an artist. An artist's greatest work is sometimes called his/her "magnum opus." Other examples exist of "opera" being used humorously to describe a genre of movie or TV program, such as "horse opera" (a Western).
