The male and female pelvic areas vary in a number of ways, as required by the differences in internal organs and their function. The most obvious difference is a shorter, broader pelvis in females, which is limited by the need to articulate the hips and legs (to walk upright in a normal manner).

Characteristics of Male Pelvis :

  • Bone are taller, heavier, and thicker
  • More prominent bone markings
  • Obturator foramen is round
  • Pubic arch v-shaped
  • Pelvic inlet heart-shaped
  • Smaller pelvic outlet smaller
  • Ischipubic rami is more everted
  • Sciatic notch is narrower
  • Subpubic arch is more acute
  • Ischial spine is projected inwards
  • Acetabulum is larger

Characteristics of Female Pelvis :

  • Bones are lighter and less dense
  • Wider / shallower profile
  • Larger superior and inferior apertures
  • Obturator foramen is oval
  • Pubic arch wider
  • Pelvic inlet oval-shaped
  • Ischiopubic rami is less everted
  • Sciatic notch is wider
  • Subpubic arch is wider
  • Ischial spine is projected outwards
  • Acetabulum is smaller

The 'false' pelvis is the greater pelvis:

  • Superior to the pelvic inlet.
  • Bounded by the abdominal wall anteriorly, the alea of illun laterally, and the L5 and S1 vertebrae posteriorly.
  • The location of some abdominal viscera, such as the sigmoid colon and some loops of ileum.
The 'true' pelvis is the lesser pelvis:
  • Between the pelvic inlet and the pelvic outlet.
  • The location of the pelvic viscera-urinary bladder and reproductive organs, such as the uterus and ovaries.
  • Bounded by the pelvic surfaces of the hip bones, sacrum, and coccyx.
  • Limited inferiorly by the musculomembranous pelvic diaphragm (levator ani).

In human anatomy, the pelvis (plural pelves or pelvises) is the part of the trunk inferioposterior (below-behind) to the abdomen in the transition area between the trunk and the lower limbs. The term is used to denote several structures:

  • the pelvic girdle or bony pelvis, the irregular ring-shaped bony structure connecting the spine to the femurs,
  • the pelvic cavity, the space enclosed by the pelvic girdle, subdivided into
    • the greater or false pelvis (inferior part of the abdominal cavity) and
    • the lesser or true pelvis which provides the skeletal framework for the perineum and the pelvic cavity (which are separated by the pelvic diaphram),
  • the pelvic region in men is hevier than womens.

"Pelvis" is the Latin word for a "basin" and the pelvis thus got its name from its shape. It is also known as hip girdle or coxa girdle.

In the adult human, it is formed in the posterior dorsal (back) by the sacrum and the coccyx, the caudal part of the axial skeleton, and laterally and posterior pair of hip bones, part of the appendicular skeleton or lower extremity. Until puberty, however, each hip bone consists of three separate bones yet to be fused - the ilium, ischum, and the pubis. The pelvis is thus composed of four parts and can consist up to ten bones or more

The true pelvis is small bowl-like shape containing the unrinary bladder and sexual organs. The false pelvis is the area been the alla or wings of the pelvis. This is a much larger area and contains some of the abdominal organs like part of the small intestine and part of the colon.

The lesser pelvis (or "true pelvis") is the space enclosed by the pelvic girdle and below the pelvic brim: between the pelvic inlet and the pelvic floor. This cavity is a short, curved canal, deeper on its posterior than on its anterior wall. Some consider this region to be the entirety of the pelvic cavity. Others define the pelvic cavity as the larger space including the greater pelvis, just above the pelvic inlet.

The greater pelvis (or "false pelvis") is the space enclosed by the pelvic girdle above and in front of the pelvic brim. It is bounded on either side by the ilium; in front it is incomplete, presenting a wide interval between the anterior borders of the ilia, which is filled by the parietes of the abdomen; behind is a deep notch on either side between the ilium and the base of the sacrum.
