Those in heaven have no need of our prayers, those in hell are beyond the help of our prayers, those in purgatory, who are still suffering the effects of being purified can benefit greatly from our prayers as is recorded in the book of Maccabees (see II Macabees xii, 46) and established in the oldest Christian tradition. It was familiar to Tertullian and Augustine and is clearly exposed in the inscriptions on the Catacombs and in ancient liturgies.
