Besides 'good' being a subjective term...
The benefits of planting a maple tree are numerous. They provide dense shade, which is very appealing for shade-loving plants (and people on hot days!). Because of their fullness, they are good wind-blockers for protecting buildings. For the same reason, some animals may prefer them over other trees for shelter. Most have colorful foliage during the autumn, and the sugar maples have sweet sap; which is both attractive to wildlife and humans (Maple syrup!). Besides this, maples have the obvious benefits of trees in general.
The only drawbacks I can think of as of now are:
1. Maples are HUGE trees, so plant them where they'll have plenty of room to grow.
2. The shade they create might make growing grass and other sun-loving plants difficult.
3. Some maples are fragile (for example, silver maples, if I remember correctly). Strong winds, heavy snow or ice might cause the limbs to break and come crashing down.
4. Some maples have serious pest problems.
(Natttt1)
Maples contribute valuable wood products, sustain the maple sugar industry and help to beautify the landscape. Maple wood, which varies in hardness, toughness and other properties, is in demand for flooring, furniture, interior woodwork, veneer, small woodenware, and supports several flourishing industries in eastern Canada. Maple is also highly prized in furniture building and cabinet-making.
