Human breast milk has one advantage over every baby formula ever invented, it is a naturally perfect food for them with the entire history of humanity standing as it's clinical trial. When babies are first put the to breast, moments after birth, they don't get milk, but a substance called "colostrum" which provides them with a rich source of nutrition, high carbohydrates and very little fat. Colostrom is produced for several days after birth, and encourges the neonate to have it's first bowel movement and clear bilirubin from the bloodstream. It also carries immunoglobulins and a variety of growth factors. Most prepared formulas can only approximate the nutritional benefits of human breast milk. It is believed that breastfeeding strengthens the bond between mother and baby, and is thought to help reduce the incidence or lessen the severity of maternal post-partum depression.

What advantage might a breastfed baby have compared to a formula-fed baby?

There are several advantages. Mom and baby bond with breastfeeding. This does not mean that it doesn't happen with bottle babies but it is known that the bond is tighter with breastfed babies. The uterus goes back into prepregnancy shape as the breast stimulation causes hormones to cause contractions. This also reduces the amount of postpartum bleeding. But the best thing is that mother's antibodies are found in the very first breast milk. This called passive immunity as the baby will have to make her own later on but it keeps her protected for around 3-4 months. Human breast milk has been made just to produce a healthy baby.
