A sense of connection is a central characteristic of spirituality - connection to a reality greater than the physical world and oneself, which may include an emotional experience of awe and reverence. Spiritual matters regard humankind's ultimate nature and purpose, not as material biological organisms, but as spirits with an eternal relationship beyond the bodily senses, time and the material world. Spirituality may also be about the development of the individual's inner life through specific practices such as meditation and prayer.

Christians believe that Jesus was born and lived as a human being to show us how to live a good life; that he died a painful death as a human being that our sins may be forgiven and that after three days of being dead he came back to life to show us that all who follow his teachings and believe in him will be with him in heaven when we die. If you have faith, then you believe.

Roman Catholic AnswerFaith is the acceptance of the word of another, trusting that one knows what the other is saying and is honest in telling the truth. The basic motive of all faith if the authority (or right to be believed) of someone who is speaking. It is called divine faith when the one believed is God. (from Modern Catholic Dictionary) Supernatural faith requires divine grace, and is a gift of God, one of the infused theological virtues. It is only for this life, but without it none of the other virtues can develop: hope & charity (or love) and we can not be saved.

Saying it is important for people to have a religious belief is a form of circular logic, because it implies belief for its own sake, which logically then is not belief at all. Think about it.

There is no harm in having a religious belief, and for many it provides a sense of hope and comfort. Equally, there is no harm in not having a religious belief. The difference can be important to individuals and to how they live and relate each other. But it is not essential, or even important, for people in general to have religious beliefs.
