I've always tried to be honest with my children because I believe that one day they will find out the truth regardless. And when they do, do I want them to wonder why I didn't tell them the truth? For instance, my children always knew that the tooth fairy is a game, that there is no Easter Bunny, that Santa Claus is a nice story, etc. I don't feel like I've ruined their fun because I haven't excluded those elements in their lives, but I haven't misled them into believing that they are real. One particular personal reason I never taught my children that Santa was real, for example, is because all their lives I have taught them that Jesus is real. What if, when they find out that Santa is fake, they'd start wondering whether Jesus is fake? That's been my reasoning behind trying to be as honest as possible with my own children.

because not only would lying teach your kid to lie it also creates unhealthy relationships. the Santa thing is ok because it gives them something to believe other than that it is lying and thats plain wrong.

Parents should not be frank with children?

If you're asking whether or not parents should be honest in dealing with their children....I believe that they should definitely be "frank" with their children. Of course, they are some things and topics that will be over their heads but it is important to speak with them as close as you can to their level. You can do this in by equating the situation to something that they have been through or that they would more readily understand. This is especially true when dealing with topics such as death, which can be quite difficult for children when adults are not open and honest with them. Young children do not always understand the deeper levels of meaning in complex statements and are likely to take them literally. Overall, it is best to keep things simple, to bring things down to their level and to let them know that their feelings are valid and normal. and that you are there to speak with them when needed.
