Originally a little Mexican guy by the name of Juan use to travel around Cheyenne WY and cook for cowboys, or at least that is how the history-display shows it on some Taco John's walls. Also Below is an excerpt from and OLD.. Taco John's Manual I received years ago. "It was actually made on a "believe it or not" typewriter.
In 1969, Harold Holmes and James Woodson purchased the franchise right's to a taco stand concept and began selling Taco John's® restaurants. The first restaurants sold measured 12 feet by 30 feet and were constructed of plywood. These camper style restaurants were built in Cheyenne, trucked to the location, and placed on a foundation. A few of these walk up, carryout, BRIGHT red & yellow restaurants still exist.
Today restaurants are generally built from the ground up and feature wood, brick, and stucco exteriors, with solariums, & window awnings.
The first Taco John's® restaurant, established in 1969, featured a limited TACO & Burrito menu, printed on a Coca-Cola signboard. Today we proudly offer 18 or more delicious menu products to our customers, with colorful product pictures on brightly lighted menu boards.
The first crew member wore a white shirt, black tie & black pants. Our uniforms today consist of Red shirts, black slacks & shoes, an apron and either a hat or visor.
Taco John's® signs have changed over the years, also. Our first sign featured a Mexican "devil" complete with pointed tail, ears, and pitchfork to go with our logo "The Hottest Spot in Town". Our Mexican man-Juan-was adopted in 1976. Even Juan has changed from a buck-toothed, slightly pudgy Mexican man look to a more realistic man tipping his hat. In 1987 we adopted the phrase 'Once we getcha, we gotcha' as an advertising slogan.
Taco John's® International, INC. - the franchiser - has grown immensely over the years. Harold Holmes and Jim Woodson handled all business matters out of a small shared office. In 1985 Taco John's® International, INC. staff numbers 60 individuals, to better assist franchisees, like your restaurant owner.
All of these changes from 1969 on have been positive growth, making Taco John's® International, INC. the 2nd largest Mexican fast-food franchiser in the world, with close to 500 restaurants. Welcome to the Mexican Fast-food business.
