By definition CANCER is MALIGNANT - benign is NOT cancer, it is just a growth (tumor).

There are three main characteristics typical of malignant (cancer) and benign (non-cancerous), for example:

  • Malignant cancers are usually fast growing (as opposed to benign cancers which are usually slow growing);
  • Malignant cancers invade the tissue, in fact the name cancer means "crab", because it invades the surrounding tissue and looks like a crab (benign cancers are usually encapsulated, therefore, do not invade the surrounding tissue);
  • Malignant cancer cells are undifferentiated, which means that they regress back to simple cells and loose their main functions (benign cancer cells are usually well differentiated).

There are exceptions. For example, kidney cancer may look benign because it's usually encapsulated, but it is actually malignant.

A malignant tumor is cancer and if unchecked can spread to other organs and kill the person. A benign tumor can still kill, but it does not spread like cancer, whereas malignant tumors invade surrounding tissues and can also spread via someone's blood-stream or lympathetic system to form a secondary growth called a metastasis elsewhere in their body.

There are many different types of benign tumors arising from different structures in the body and benign tumors usually grow slowly and do not metastasize although they can sometimes be multiple. They tend to remain confined within a fibrous capsulr so if necessary surgical removal is usually relatively straightn forward.

But benign tumors anywhere in the body can sometimes be serious if they press on blood vessels or nerves. But in other cases doctors may decide someone's benign tumors may need no treatment other than observation to ensure they continue to cause no problems. Treatment of a benign tumor may be needed if their symptoms cause a problem. Then if surgery is deemed appropriate the goal is to remove the tumor without damaging surrounding tissues. Other types of treatment may include radiation or medication.

But in the brain a benign tumor can be as serious as a malignant brain tumor. Either can build up pressure in the brain and cause compression of adjoining brain areas as the tumor expands. So whether malignant ot benign, brain tumor may cause muscle weakness, loss of vision or other sensory disturbances, speech difficulties and in about 20% of cases epeliptic seizures. The presence of an expanding tumor may increase pressure within the skull causing headaches, vomiting, visual disturbance and impoairment of mental functioning.

Because it is located in the melanocytes which are located in the deepest layer of the epidermis. The epidermis itself is avascular, however, the dermis, which lies directly beneath the epidermis is very vascular. If malignant melanoma cells make their way to the dermis, they can easily spread to other parts of the body.

Is a malignant tumor cancerous?

Yes, a malignant tumor is cancerous. The term "malignant" is used in medical terminology to describe tumors or growths that are cancerous in nature. Malignant tumors are characterized by uncontrolled and abnormal cell growth, and they have the potential to invade nearby tissues and spread to other parts of the body through a process called metastasis. This ability to invade and metastasize distinguishes malignant tumors from benign tumors, which do not invade nearby tissues and are typically noncancerous.

Why is malignant melanoma so resistant to chemotherapy?

One suggestion as of late 2003 is that the genes ordinarily responsible for apoptosis (cell self-destruction) do not function normally in melanomas.

What can happen if you do not wear sunsreen?

You can get sunburn, where your skin will go bright red and start to peel and/or blister and you will feel very feint and dizzy. You can also develop a malignant melanoma which is essentially skin cancer. You should really just wear sun cream any time you are out in the sun with a high spf, low spf's are not as good at protecting against skin cancer. Skin cancer is becoming a big big problem so be safe.

How does a history of sunburn impact the risk for malignant melanoma?

It is not so much the total sun exposure that seems important, rather it is the history of sunburn, (especially if severe or at an early age), that correlates with the increased risk.

Do antioxidant pills cause melanoma?

No, they don't cause melanoma, which is a skin cancer. They may make you more sensitive to the sun, however, so be sure to use sunscreen. Reduce your time in the sun if you notice you sunburn more quickly.

Is there any antidote for cancer?

No. But cancer may be treated, usually with chemotherapy (chemicals) or radiotherapy (radiation), and the idea is to control malignant cells so that they do not spread to other organs of the body.

Why do many cancers harm the body?

Cancer is a cell mutation where the cell reproduces rapidly and too much. Then those new cells become cancer cells and continue to split out of control. Yet, the body does not need so many of one type of cell so quickly. The cancer cells are large in quantity and take over that area, causing pressure on other normal healthy cells. Those tissues are overthrown by the cancer ones and it off-sets the balance of the body. This is dangerous because you need a specific amount of everything in your body to work, so you have many cancer cells and less of the healthy cells and can be very hazardous to countless of daily functions necessary to life. There really is only one Cancer, and that's just cancer, no matter where it is in your body. It just affects different cells. i.e.- Lung cancer is a mutation in lung cells, and Brain cancer is a mutation in brain cells. The only two categories cancer is divided into generally are malignant and benign. Malignant cancer will carry the cancerous cells by the bloodstream to other parts of the body, and the cancer will then affect that spot as well. This cancer is slightly more dangerous than benign cancer, which will only stay in the organ where it first started and will not travel through the body.
