Why is materialism the cause of moral decline?

Materialism is the fuel of desires, selfishness and greed. Desires spawned from materialism and inflamed by passions leads to obsessions. Then moral decline occurs whenever people seek to selfishly act upon their obsessions having absolutely no regard for the rights and needs of others.
