The plant, though Scandinavian, is of English tradition. It was chosen because it was a Christmas green plant. In the 19th century, a tradition evoked that if any two met under the plant, the were required to kiss. That is all I know.

The exact way in which mistletoe became associated with Christmas has been lot to time, but it was once thought to have special properties to protect a home and its residents from harm, as well as being a symbol of the ultimate and divine male essence, which originally meant fertility but came to represent Christ. Hanging it in the home at Christmas was intended to protect the family and keep them safe for the coming year, as well as allowing them to prosper.
