How does music help make a movie interesting?

Music is important in films because it creates an atmosphere, and tells the audience what emotions they should be experiencing. It adds scale and dramatises events E.g. Someone good dies in a film, the sad music kicks in. Without the sad music the death of the person/thing doesn't seem as significant. In a thriller film like 'Jaws', there is a lot of tense music, as there is a lot of tense moments, however if it wasn't for the music, them events wouldn't seem as dramatic.

I remember in the movie an American Werewolf in London they had "Bad Moon Rising" play as he was being hunted by a werewolf. Songs often identify or become part of our national identity from a movie.
