Which model do you have? Please provide details regarding tractor model and what it does when you try to start it. Is everything fresh? ....fuel, oil, air filter, spark plug, battery? Will it crank over? If so, does it try to fire (start)? Let me know and I'll try to guide you through.

Turn down the speed and then shut it off. I did this with my white outdoor tractor and it stopped backfiring. There was too much gas at the high speed and wasn't burning off fast enough and would backfire.

three things to check is spark plug, timing, (flywheel key) and intake and exhast valves.

Not sure how to answer your question - has to do with a hot engine and fuel in the combustion chamber. Letting the engine idle for a few minutes before you kill it will cure the problem.
