  • The spirit and direction of the Nation are founded upon and reflected in its historic heritage.
  • The historical and cultural foundations of the Nation should be preserved as a living part of our community life and development in order to give a sense of orientation to the American people.
  • Historic properties significant to the Nation's heritage are being lost or substantially altered, often inadvertently, with increasing frequency.

The preservation of this irreplaceable heritage is in the public interest so that its vital legacy of cultural, educational, aesthetic, inspirational, economic, and energy benefits will be maintained and enriched for future generations of People.

There are many, many reasons to preserve and conserve family heritage.

1. It documents medical conditions so that those who come after us know what to expect and can take steps to protect themselves.

2. Lawsuits over family inheritances have been won or lost on a family's records of its genealogy--which proves legal and familial relationships.

3. If we don't document our ancestors today, our descendants may not have what they need to look for information in the future.

4. It helps explain to us why we are the way we are.

5. It gives us a sense of belonging to something that is greater than what we are.

6. It validates ancestral stories that would otherwise be lost for all time.

7. It satisfies our natural curiosity about whether or not we are related to anyone famous.

8. It gives us a sense of connectedness with the past, present, and future.

9. It helps our descendants get to know us.

10. It is also a great way to learn languages, history, and geography if you do your own research.
