I think the origin of anything Christmas related comes from Christ and his birth on 25 December. Red could signify blood, and although in my opinion red is the colour that is used in painting Easter Eggs. Also mid European countries celebrate Easter by boiling eggs in red paint ( edible food dye ) to remind them of the Jesus's blood.
As far as Christmas goes I think red could still mean blood and green could mean everlasting youth. Green , means fresh, alive .
In an more easy explanation you could just pick red for berries adn green for holly.
But I think that's too easy. It must be deeper than that.....
The color green is a natural representation of eternal life, specifically the evergreen tree and how it survives through the winter season. That's why, in Christian belief, green represents the eternal life of Jesus Christ. The color red symbolizes Christ's blood which was shed during his crucifixion.
Red and green are considered the colors of Christmas because Poinsettia plants bloom during Christmas season only which last until January. The typical color of the flowers are red but nowadays, one can have rose and yellow poinsettias too. The green color symbolizes eternal life which can be associated with Jesus. In Islam religion, green is the color of Islam.
