The assigning of colors has never been officially set, and depending on the outlet you watched before about 2000, either party could be either color. Then when the 2000 presidential election came and recounts and court battles extended the process, the mainstream media found themselves reporting more and more often on the assignment of states, and eventually adopted the red state/blue state model for simplicity.

Historically, the use of blue before the year 2000 election in the U.S. and up to present day in other countries, has symbolized the conservative or right wing thinking of the country; whereas, red symbolized close ties to socialist/communist and/or leftist thinking. This may have been derived from red bandannas worn members of leftist parties abroad.

However, during the 2000 election in the U.S., all media outlets chose to be unified by agreeing to use red for Republicans and blue for Democrats.

For some time, news channels used red or blue to represent each party on maps, but it was only in 2000 that the standard system was adopted, with red for Republicans and blue for Democrats. Neither parties agreed to this, it was what the media chose, so the parties went along with it.

This system is an exception rather than a rule. In most countries such as the UK, France, Canada and Australia, red tends to represent left wing parties and blue tends to represent right wing parties.

What color represents the democrats?

Blue has become the color used to represent Democrats on political maps. I am not sure that the party had anything to do with choosing this color. The color red is assigned to the Republicans, but red seems more fitting for the Democrat political goals since socialists have long been known as Reds.

Why Michelle Obama wear a purple dress?

Michelle Obama may have chosen to wear a purple dress for a variety of reasons, including personal preference, the occasion or event she was attending, or the symbolism associated with the color purple. Purple is often associated with royalty, power, and creativity, and it can be seen as a strong and confident color choice. Ultimately, her decision to wear a purple dress likely reflects her personal style and the message she wants to convey.

Is the Republican party left or right?

The easy way to remember this is the three "R"'s - Republican-Right-Red, from which then you can deduce that Democrats are blue. The red and blue thing came from a news network map during one of the elections when they were showing which states voted which way. Red and blue make a good contrast on color TV. Blue, particularly dark blue, is often associated with Conservative parties, originating from its use by that party of the United Kingdom. Red is traditionally associated with socialism and communism. Thus says wikipedia. In the United States, since the year 2000, the mass media has begun to associate red with the Republican Party, but the party has not adopted red in any official sense. I personally speculate that the association of red with the Republican party stems from the Democratic party's desire to distance themselves from the association with Socialism and Communism. But that's a conclusion you'll have to make for yourself.

What are the 2 symbols for the 2 major political parties?

The two major political parties do not have official colors, but you will generally see them operating in red, white or blue. In recent elections, the news media has used red to signify the Republicans and blue to signify the Democrats. In reality, the campaign colors of the presidential nominees ultimately define the parties. Most candidates running for president will choose a variation of red, white and blue, but Carter/Mondale used green and white in the 1980 campaign. You can see Democrat sign templates at www.DemocratNationalCommittee.com and you can see Republican templates at www.VictoryStore.com I have worked professionally in politics for almost 30 years, so this is a reliable answer. If by "signs" you mean symbols, Democrats use the donkey; Republicans use the elephant.
