In Roman times, Wheat was thrown at the bride and groom as a symbol of fertility. Under Queen Elizabeth I, wheat cakes where broken up and thrown instead. Once they became costly, rice was a cheap substitute, and it "stuck".[1] The Urban Legend that raw rice causes birds to explode has been found to be false.[2] Because of this rumor, bird seed or bubbles are now being thrown at weddings. It is an Italian Tradition to throw Confetti at weddings. The confetti symbolize money and good fortune for the couple.[3] A Scottish tradition is to throw flower pedals on the couple. This is also a symbol of fertility.[4]

It's an old wedding ritual where the rice represents fertility just like the wedding cake whether people know it or not represents fertility for the newly married couple

Rice has been a part of wedding ceremonies for many centuries because throughout the ages it was a symbol for fruitfulness, a wish for the couple to have great prosperity and many children.

  • Most churches appreciate it if the guests cease throwing rice and confetti as it difficult to clean up and often there are weddings to follow so there is no time to clean it up. There are others ways: The guests are given bottled bubble makers and can blow bubbles when the bride and groom come out of the church or, they can be given balloons once outside the church and let them go when the bride and groom get into the limo.

This custom is very popular in Greek weddings. It is a folk belief that dates way back in time. The guests who are present in the ceremony throw rice at the newly married couple in order to grow old together, to grow roots together as the Greeks say. Another point of view is that the groom in this way calms the bad spirits by offering them rice and the bride is blessed with fertility because grains and especially rice is considered a symbol of abundance and fertility.
