It is considered the classic tragic love story
It penetrates the heart of anyone who has ever been in love like these two crazy kids. For reals. I think most of us have that desire to be that deeply and recklessly in love, and to be loved back in the same manner. Also, because you're rooting for Romeo and Juliet the whole time, it comes as such a huge disappointment that they never get to be together, much less continue the bright futures ahead of them. So sad... :( The fact that the Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is such an impacting one, makes it devastatingly and yet wonderfully unforgettable.
Because a lot of people relate to Romeo and Juliet. The star-crossed lovers were foolish to kill themselves and never stopped to think of the consequences of their actions because of their precious love for each other. But their deaths eventually made their feuding families stop to think of their actions and realized their feuding was the only thing that kept them from noticing what was happening around them and what was going on with their son and daughter. But lies and secrecy made it impossible for their families.
Maybe because of the story. In the time it was published, stories with happy endings are really 'prone'. And since William Shakesphere decided to make a one of a kind story, he made Romeo and Juliet a story with a not-so-happy ending. And the fact that almost everyone who watched it cried their eyes out didhelped. And this story is about romance, tragedy, things that hopeless romantics like to watch. But it really IS interesting...
Romeo and Juliet were ficticous characters in a play. The reason that their characters became famous is because their love could not be denied. Even though their families were both against their love, they were not willing to give up on each other. They were even willing to die rather than live apart. A love that strong is hard to find and people longed for it. They play was a tragedy because in the end they both died needlessly and it was because of the families unwillingness to allow the union.
The story involves elements of drama, humour, tragedy and above all, romance. It is well written and has a compelling dramatic structure, but to me the main reason for the play's enduring popularity is because most people can associate with it on some level. Most people remember the strength of their first true love and the intense feelings of both joy and pain that come with it. Admittedly, the majority of first relationships do not end in double suicide after slaying your loved one's relatives, but most do involve conlict and end in a way that feels intensely tragic to those involved at the time. People can empathise with Romeo and Juliet and their perfect eternal love that cannot be diminished by time.
It's touched the hearts of so many people through the ages. Its status as a classic is really just its popularity has endured.
Why? It's probably to do with a combination of factors, but elements of the story are familiar to all of us. In the story, two lovers fall for each other, despite the circumstances being stacked against them: their friends and families disapprove, but they love each other anyway. Most of us can relate to the idea of forbidden love, or certainly to the idea that love is blind. We can't choose who we fall for, and it sometimes throws our world upside down, but we chase it anyway. This is a very romantic idea, which is appealing.
Let's not forget that William Shakespeare was a gifted writer: his words had the move people to tears, and laughter, and much more besides. The feelings people experience when reading his words (or hearing them performed) are very powerful.
The fact that it's a play is another clue: most classics begin just as entertainment, and this is no exception. If you still can't see why it's a Classic, go and watch it live (or rent the movie)
It's a terrific love story, and one of the few tragic love stories we still have. As well, teenagers love the image of the teen lovers standing alone against a hostile world. There is no better example of this than Romeo and Juliet.
Although Romeo and Juliet was writen a long time ago the characters and themes are very universal and the storyline and language is very creative
I think it can be the love between them of which people give examples
