If you have none, you'll die. Without sodium in your bloodstream, your blood cells will all rupture and your nervous system won't function properly. On the other hand, too much sodium can cause high blood pressure and other serious problems.

he body regulates the level of sodium in the body through numerous interacting processes because the concentration must remain in a narrow range. If sodium levels deviate too high or too low, it causes problems in the body. Sodium is important for fluid distribution, blood pressure, cellular work and electrical activity.

Most of the sodium you get in your diet is in the form of sodium chloride, a salt compound. Sodium itself is an element -- more specifically, it's a metal -- but it's quite rare in elemental form, because it's so reactive. In nature, sodium occurs in the form of any number of salts. A sodium salt consists of positively charged particles of sodium combined with negatively charged particles of various identities. Sodium chloride aside, other common sodium salts include sodium bicarbonate -- baking soda -- and sodium hydroxide, which is lye.

Your body needs sodium to help with muscle contraction and enzyme operation, both of which are important in a proper acid-base balance in the body.

Of course a person with high blood pressure, and kidney issues should limit the sodium intake, because it wont process properly, or as quickly
