The word Television is made up of Tele meaning " Remote " and Vision , we now have Remote Vision ! Television !!!
It is because tele means 'far away' in Greek and vision is seeing.

tv "idiot box"
Television can be both an idiot box and a knowledge box, depending on how it is used. It can be a source of mindless entertainment or a platform for educational programming and informative documentaries. Ultimately, the content one chooses to watch determines whether television is a tool for acquiring knowledge or a mind-numbing distraction.
The ORIGINAL Idiot Box!
Pulitzer-prize winner John Updike, in the novel "Rabbit, Run"
OK, this is just a guess. I suggest 'Idiot's Lantern' is a derogatory term for television. My parents often referred to it as the 'stupid box' or 'goggle box'. It can also be considered as a reference to our reliance on TV. The phrase could portray us as the 'idoits' gathering around our 'lantern' like moths around a flame. This suggests that we are aware of the risks of technology and yet we are drawn to it. It also suggests that television represents a light or a hope (like the queens corination as shown in the episode) that draws us all together (like the people of Britain came together in front of televisions for the first time to watch Elizabeth become Queen).
