Rainforest's have an abundance of trees and trees give out oxygen, therefore, rainforests give oxygen to the body, called Earth, just as lungs give oxygen to the human body. However, it's not completely true. Trees give out oxygen during the day, trough photosynthesis process, taking carbon dioxide from air to transform into celulosis they need to grow. But they take oxygen back during from the air during the night. Growing trees take more carbon dioxide than oxygen. Mature forests, instead, have a neutral balance between the carbon dioxide they take and the amount they give back to the air, as well as the amount of oxygen. That's why planting new trees (to use the wood, to replace the forest or to make paper, for instance) produce more oxygen and take more carbon dioxide from atmosphere than just keeping the old forests. As a matter of fact, the real lungs of the earth are the oceans, where the algae (see wikipedia) make photosynthesis and extract carbon dioxide from the air to grow, and provide food to the fishes and other aquatic animals, so that this carbon don't come back to the atmospere.

Because it is so huge, and most people know that trees turn carbon dioxide into oxygen during the day. However at night, they do the opposite.

Why forest are called lungs of the earth?

Forests are called the lungs of the Earth as they give us oxygen. Earth actually do not have any lung but forest acts as a lung. Like when we inhale oxygen, this oxygen goes into lungs and when we exhale carbon dioxide, this gas is exhaled from lungs. Similarly, forest exhale oxygen and inhale carbon dioxide. So, the forest acts a lung.
